Gender-neutral uniforms !!
What a great initiative by The Valayanchirangara Government Lower Primary School, near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, in Kerala.
This school introduced unisex uniforms for boys and girls. That is All students will be wearing 3/4th shorts and shirts, irrespective of gender.
Isn't it great when I was a child I wore a pant shirt till class 2nd but all of a sudden I was made to wear a skirt and shirt as per the school uniform code of conduct.
I was not happy but not sad as well because I got a new skirt. At that time I did not understand that what if we all had the same uniform in school irrespective of gender.
In school, we all are students so we must have similar dresses not distinguishing our gender.
This school has only strength of 754 students. The new dress code was planned in 2018 and was introduced in the lower primary section of the school and this academic year when the schools were reopened after the pandemic induced lockdown, it has been extended to all students.
This tiny change of clothing will change a lot in students' life. This will help students to actively participate in extra curriculum activities.
Boys and girls will be able to blend. And this rule has been implemented from primary classes so these tiny munchkins who are the future of our country will have a perspective of gender neutrality in our country.
According to Vivek V, president of the PTA (parent-teachers association), the State wants all the children to enjoy the same level of freedom.
And yess children will enjoy the same level of freedom.
According to the education department, the government policy is to encourage gender neutrality and will fully support any school which plans to introduce such a gender-neutral uniform.
The Kerala government earlier this month clarified that there was no law asking teachers to wear sari, with higher education minister R Bindu saying such a practice of demanding to wear sari was not conducive to Kerala's progressive attitude.
Vidya Mukundan, a Kochi-based designer, designed the uniform. After considering various designs, the decision was to increase the length of the shorts and make a 3/4th for all the students.
